About the NZ Local Election Data Explorer
This dashboard explores DIA local authority election statistics by election year. The 2025 view includes all current local-authority layers, Māori ward polls, and the available Licensing Trust election statistics. The 2022 view includes territorial authorities, mayors, general and Māori wards, boards, subdivisions, regional councils and constituencies. The 2019 view includes those layers, District Health Boards, and the available Licensing Trust statistics. The 2016 and 2013 views include territorial authorities, mayors, general/ordinary wards, boards, subdivisions, regional councils, general and Māori constituencies, District Health Boards, and the available Licensing Trust statistics. Territorial Māori wards are not offered for 2013 because they did not yet exist.

Glossary
- Turnout
- Number of voters divided by the number of electors on the roll in contested areas.
- Blank votes
- Blank votes cast divided by total voters.
- Informal votes
- Informal votes cast divided by total voters.
- Special votes cast
- The number of voters who cast a special vote.
- Special votes allowed %
- Allowed special votes, residential and ratepayer, divided by total special votes cast.
- Special votes disallowed %
- Special votes cast minus special votes allowed, divided by total special votes cast.
- Candidates per vacancy
- Candidates divided by positions.
- Uncontested
- An election in which the number of candidates did not exceed the positions available.
- No statistics
- No usable value is available for the selected metric. This is shown separately from an uncontested election and from an area outside the selected layer or filter.
